Turpin, bishop of Brechin (fl.1165×69-1189×98)

Biography
Watt and Murray, Fasti, 53: Turpin was elected bishop of Brechin by '1178' and was consecrated by 1178×88. He occurs probably in April 1189 and certainly 1189×98. Watt, Graduates, 548-49: Turpin might have Norse connections due to his forename. He occurs as master when witnessing in a St Andrews context, 1165×69 and might have been a clerk of St Andrews or a royal clerk ? the latter being more probable). He was elected to the see of Brechin between 1173×78, probably very near the end of that range. It is probable that he was one of two Scottish bishops consecrated in March 1179 at the Third Lateran Council. It is not certain that he was consecrated before 1188. He was dead, or had resigned, by August 1198×March 1199. Note that Turpin may also be from Latin turpis, 'ugly, base'. Rollason, _Durham Liber Vitae_, ii, 212
