William Wishart, bishop of St Andrews (d.1279)

Biography
Watt and Murray, Fasti, 190, 380, 394: William was possibly archdeacon of St Andrews by 22 February 1254, and he continued in that office until he was consecrated bishop of St Andrews on 15 October 1273. When he was elected to the bishopric of St Andrews on 2 June 1271, he was also bishop-elect of Glasgow and royal chancellor, having been elected to the see of Glasgow at the king's instance after the death of Nicholas Moffat in 1270. He died at Morebattle, Roxburghshire on 28 May 1279. Watt, Graduates, 590-94: William was from unknown origins, but there is a tradition that his family settled in Kincardineshire. He was born in 1226 or before and his father was probably John Wishart, sheriff of Mearns in the 1230s. His putative brother was, then, John Wishart who held lands in Conveth and Fordoun (KCD) in the 1240s and 1260s. He may have been the father of Robert Wishart, later bishop of Glasgow, or of William, James (both born in 1250s), or Thomas, born in the 1260s. He probably also had a daughter, Mary (d. after 1311), who may have married William Oliphant, by whom she had a son, William, lord of Aberdalgie (d. 1329/30). Her second husband was Richard Siward, whom she married before December 1295. William Wishart was a master by 20 March 1248 and probably studied at Paris. He became a papal chaplain around 13 January 1257. Before his election to the bishopric of Glasgow in 1270, he was said to have held 22 rectories and prebends and three can be identified - the collegiate church of St Mary in St Andrews, before 7 November 1250; as a canon of Glasgow on 19 April 1266; and as archdeacon of St Andrews. The others may have been in England. He was king's clerk and chancellor from the 1250s. He was buried in the new cathedral at St Andrews on 2 June 1279.
