Alan Durward (d.1275)

Biography
Alan was the son of Thomas Hostiarius, or Durward. The family's original name was 'of Lundie', from Lundie in Angus. They were hereditary ushers or doorwards of the king, hence the surname Durward. Alan's landholdings included the lordship of Lundie, lands in Mar based at Lumphanan castle, lands in the Mearns and Aberdeenshire. By 1233, Alan was lord of Urquhart. From about this time he also held the title of earl of Atholl and claimed the earldom of Mar. Around 1244 he became justiciar of Scotia, and he later married Alexander II's illegitimate daughter, Marjory, with whom he had three daughters and one son, Thomas, who predeceased him. Alan died in 1275 and was buried at Coupar Angus Abbey. A. Young, 'Alan Durward', ODNB, xvii, 423; [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/8328]
