Walter Lindsay (III), son of William (II) (d.c.1222)

Biography
Walter was a son of William Lindsay (II) evidence: [3/350/8] apparently of a different mother from David (I) Justiciar of Lothian with Alexander of Stirling, ca 1208 × 15 Sheriff of Berwick-upon-Tweed (1210s/20s): - witnessed charter of William son of Earl Patrick (Kelso Liber, no. 303) - also agreement between Earl Patrick and Coldingham (ND no. 122) He made an agreement with Prior Arnold of Coldingham to have a private chapel in his court at Lamberton (BWK) between 1203 and 1211 (4/20/13). This is the first sign that Walter (III) was the lord of Lamberton, although he was unrelated from the family who took Lamberton as a surname. According to Scots Peerage, he held several estates in England: Fordington and Ulseby (Lincs) and Molesworth (Huntingdon), although I have not checked the records for these. He was also apparently a donor to Croyland Abbey (Lincs). He was an ambassador of King Alexander II to England in the summer of 1215 (1/7/13). He witnessed a number of royal charters but we don’t have any surviving charters in his name in Scotland. He died circa 1221. Under the year 1222, the Chronicle of Melrose says that Walter Lindsay’s widow was married with the king’s consent to P. de Valognes, against her will because they were related in the third or fourth degree, and Valognes travelled to Rome and got a dispensation and thus the unnamed wife was forced to remain in the marriage.
