Ranulf de Wat, archdeacon of St Andrews (d.1209)

Biography
Watt and Murray, Fasti, 393, 417: Ranulf appears on 2 February 1194 as official of St Andrews until his succession as archdeacon by 6 June 1199, which he probably held since 17 March 1199. He died in 1209. Watt, Graduates, 576-7: Ranulf was from unknown origins though he seems to have been brought by Bishop Roger of St Andrews, son of the earl of Leicester, from England. His surname on his seal appears as Wat', which may be a shortened form of Watton, derived from Long Whatton manor in Leicester. He is first found in February 1194 as master, probably qualified in canon law, at which time he is also found as St Andrews official. He remained at St Andrews after the translation of Bishop William Malveisin on 20 September 1202. He was a judge-delegate on two certain occasions, dating ×spring 1207 and 20 March 1207, though he was an auditor and involved in other cases.
